Rocky Forge Wind Farm in Botetourt begins construction Monday

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – New developments for Rocky Forge Wind Farm in Botetourt County, which has been in the works for around a decade.

Botetourt County and developers Apex Clean Energy say they have received all permits necessary to move forward with construction on Virginia’s first onshore wind farm.

“They continue to mobilize, doing some surveying, staking, anticipating that the official commencement of construction will start on Monday,” said Botetourt County director of community development Nicole Pendleton at a January 28 county board meeting.

Early construction will consist of prep work and road construction.

The turbines are expected to arrive in spring 2026.

President Trump signed an executive order on January 20 seeking to temporarily pause the approval of federal permits for wind farm projects, but Rocky Forge developers say they have all the necessary permits and are ready to proceed.

The project will provide up to 250 jobs during construction and is expected to generate around $30 million in local and state tax revenue over the lifetime of the facility.

The wind farm is supposed to be operational by the end of 2026.
