TSA welcomes digital ID readers nationwide

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be accepting Virginia-issued mobile drivers’ licenses with digital ID readers nationwide at checkpoints.

Travelers can download the Virginia Mobile App on their phone for a virtual identity screening process rather than at a physical photo ID and boarding pass location with a TSA security officer. This will be at the entry at the Virginia airport checkpoints with readers.

Virginia’s Mobile ID (mID) is secure and digital for individuals with a Virginia-issued mobile driver’s license to act as a more convenient option when going through the security process.

Virginia residents can use their TSA-approved digital ID at more than 230 airports for identity verification. The units will capture the real-time photo of the person traveling and match it to the face on the person’s ID. Once the TSA officer clears the person into the checkpoint, the images will be deleted.

Travelers who use the technology do not need to show a boarding pass, however, the pass will need to be shown to the airline gate agent.
