Two people, dozens of cats displaced after fire in Vinton


VINTON, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to a cat shelter in Vinton on December 31 that displaced two people and injured multiple cats.

Around 8:18 p.m. on Tuesday, fire crews responded to a home at the 200 block of Foxland Avenue for reports of a structure fire. On the scene, Wagon 2 found smoke coming from the one-story building.

Firefighter officials said the blaze was brought under control in around 20 minutes. The fire damage was contained to a single room and its contents.

Two people and 47 cats were inside the home at the time of the fire. The Roanoke County Fire Marshals Office has reported the two people were not injured; however, 2-3 of the cats were injured.

The couple has been displaced and is being assisted by the American Red Cross. The damage to the home has been estimated at around $100,000.

The Roanoke County Fire Marshals Office determined that the fire was accidental due to discarded smoking material.
