ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A winter storm will continue to impact the Mid-Atlantic on Monday. Southwest and Central Virginia can expect a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain to start the week.
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories will remain in place through early Monday evening. Accumulating snowfall and ice will lead to travel issues, so use extreme caution on the roads. Significant icing could result in tree damage and power outages.
Widespread wintry mix is anticipated for Monday morning. The snow/sleet and freezing rain will become more scattered during the afternoon and early evening. Highs will be in the upper 20s and 30s under cloudy skies.
Ice amounts up to 0.40″ are possible in parts of the Alleghany Highlands, Roanoke Valley, and New River Valley. Further snow accumulation may occur, more so north of I-64. Regardless of the precipitation type, this will be a messy winter storm. Please use extra caution when traveling.
Most of the precipitation will taper off Monday evening, although mountain snow showers will linger to the west. Those snow showers will gradually end overnight as the storm system exits toward the east. Lows will be in the 20s and teens, but blustery winds will result in wind chill values below zero west of the Blue Ridge.
Increasing sunshine is expected for Tuesday, but it will be colder and gusty. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible. Afternoon highs will be in the frigid 20s and lower 30s along/west of the Blue Ridge. Temperatures in Central Virginia and Southside will top out in the middle/upper 30s.
Bitterly cold weather is slated for Wednesday and Thursday. Morning lows will be in the teens while afternoon temperatures will rise into the 20s and lower 30s. Breezy winds will make it feel even colder. Each day, mostly clear to partly cloudy skies will be overhead.
Another storm system may bring snow and a wintry mix to Southwest and Central Virginia late Friday into Saturday. The WFXR Pinpoint Weather Team will continue to monitor the situation.
