Pinpoint Weather: Snow for some, cold for all

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for most of the New River Valley and Highlands with a Winter Storm Warning for the northwestern mountains on Sunday.

Rain is expected, possibly mixed with snow, to start the day, changing to snow as the cold air moves in. The New River Valley and Highlands could see one to two inches with isolated areas up to three inches. The Mountain Empire and areas north of I-64 are expected to see three to five inches with northwestern mountains picking up five to 10 inches. The remainder of the area will see mostly rain but light accumulation is possible as the event comes to an end.

A mix is expected around sunrise in the west with the snow line moving eastward through the morning in the afternoon before ending early in the evening.

Temperatures on Sunday will start off in the 30s to near 40 with temperatures dropping into the afternoon and evening hours.

Windy conditions will develop later Sunday into Monday with gusts to 30 mph possible. The wind will push the cold air into the region.

The coldest air we have seen in at least two years will move in for the first half of the week with highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits and teens. A slight warmup is expected for the second half of the week.
