Mother of Malayshia Solomon pleads guilty to child abuse charges in connection to 12-year-old’s death



LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – According to court records, Karita Winston, the mother of 12-year-old Malayshia Solomon pleaded guilty to two child abuse charges in connection to Solomon’s death back in February 2023.

A third charge of child endangerment was dropped, according to court records.

WFXR first reported on Solomon’s death after Lynchburg Police said a shooting took place at her home on the 1400 block of Monroe Street on February 24, 2023.

Investigators said Solomon was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where she later died from a gunshot wound.

It wasn’t until March 2024 that Winston was charged with two child abuse charges and child endangerment.

Solomon’s brother, a 16-year-old is also facing an involuntary manslaughter charge in his sister’s death. He has a trial scheduled for February 2025, after a mistrial was declared in August 2024.

Winston is scheduled to be sentenced in April 2025.
