BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – During a town council meeting in Blacksburg on Tuesday, February 11, members voted to censure Councilmember Liam Watson.
With a unanimous vote, aside from Watson himself who abstained, the council passed the resolution to censure Watson for several violations of its handbook including making disparaging remarks about the EMS cost recovery ordinance, reaching out to federal officials outside of established parameters, and using the town letterhead and logo for personal use, like writing to federal agencies regarding mail delays.
“It is disappointing that my fellow councilmembers have brought a resolution to censure me for simply doing what I have always done since taking office – that is passionately representing my constituents. Our disagreements strengthen our democratic body while resolutions such as these, on the other hand, weaken it,” said Watson. “Therefore, while I wholeheartedly disagree with this resolution before us, I abstain. It is my hope that after the final vote is taken, whatever the outcome, that we can resume the work for the people of Blacksburg.”
The resolution also states the council reserves the right to take further action, including removing Watson from his appointment and board assignments if similar violations occur in the future.
The Blacksburg council member is also facing charges of election fraud after being indicted in March of 2024.
