ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – A little birdy told WFXR that the annual Great Backyard Bird Count is returning to Virginia State Parks for 2025 and it’s a great chance to get outside, enjoy nature and have fun looking for birds!
Each February, millions of people count or hear numerous birds in their backyards. From February 14 through February 17, you can participate in the bird count. The event gives people the opportunity to connect and share their passion for birds, along with learning migration patterns.
This also allows scientists the opportunity to understand global bird patterns before their yearly migration.
Participants can download the Merlin Bird ID app to help with the identification of the birds in the area or use the eBird Mobile app to enter their bird sightings. Then, log the number of birds you see count within 15 minutes on one of the four days during the event.
“Bear Creek Lake has a wide variety of birds you can see this time of year and our program is perfect for anyone wanting to learn more about these species,” said Bear Creek Lake State Park Manager Joey Dayton. “On February 15, we will offer a guided hike program at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. that will visit different habitats.”

- New River Trail, Max Meadows
- Twin Lakes, Green Bay
If you can’t find your local park on the list, you are still encouraged to visit any location to participate in the bird counting.
