Bedford County nurse wins $1 million on Christmas Eve

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A Bedford County nurse is $1 million richer after stopping at a market and deli shop in Moneta on Christmas Eve of 2024.

On Tuesday, December 24, Jacqueline Mangus stopped at the Lake Mart & Deli, located on Scruggs Road, and bought ticket #081604 in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle. At the time, she had no idea it was one of five top prize-winning tickets.

It wasn’t until she was getting ready for work one day that she was watching the news and saw that a winning ticket was purchased in Moneta for $1 million. Jacqueline remembered she had bought a ticket for the drawing at that store in Moneta, so she retrieved it from the Bible where she had been keeping it.

When she checked the numbers, she realized she was holding the winning ticket in her hand and was $1 million richer!

“I was tickled to death!” she told Virginia Lottery officials.

After learning she had just won, Jacqueline did what any true essential worker and nurse would do, she went to work to serve the community.

The other four million-dollar tickets were bought in Ashburn, Fishersville, Henrico and Herndon.
