Pinpoint Weather: Pockets of ice overnight, cold next week

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Moisture will work into the region overnight and into the day on Saturday ahead of a very strong cold front.

The air could be cold enough for patchy freezing rain during the early morning hours. For most, the icing should end by 9 a.m. The main issues would be on elevated surfaces.

Temperatures will warm above freezing on Saturday with highs mainly in the 40s after starting in the 20s and 30s.

More moisture could work into the region on Sunday behind the cold front, which could bring snow to portions of the region. The best chance will be along the western mountains and north of I-64. If a few busts show up to the south, a quick inch or two is possible, though it likely will not be widespread.

Then, the cold air will settle into the region. An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for the New River Valley and Highlands as it will feel like it is well below zero for the first half of the week.

Temperatures will fall from the 30s and 40s over the weekend into the 20s for the first half of next week with single-digit lows. Temperatures will warm slightly toward the end of the week.
