LCS announces 2025 cell phone policy, ‘Off & Away All Day’

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Lynchburg City Schools have announced their ‘Off & Away All Day’ cell phone policy.

When students return from their winter break on January 6, 2025, they will be required to keep their personal electronic devices ‘Off & Away All Day.’

This includes cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, tablets, non-school-approved computers, video game consoles, and more.

Personal devices must be put away in their lockers or backpacks instead of their pockets from the start of the school day until the final bell. Students may also stay away from devices during lunch periods and between classes.

The initiative is to create an environment for students that is distraction-free for student success.

“LCS is committed to ensuring the transition to cell-phone-free education is as smooth and positive as possible for students, families, and staff members. We’re working closely with principals and administrators to ensure every school is ready to start implementing Off & Away All Day as soon as students return from winter break,” said Chief Academic and Student Services Officer Derrick Brown.

The use of electronics during the school day can impact students negatively in their learning environment. ‘Off & Away All Day’ will be across all grade levels and for the future of LCS as a part of the statewide initiative.

Elementary students who ride the bus must also follow this rule.

“This policy update reflects our commitment to creating a consistent and distraction-free learning environment across all grade levels,” said Dr. Ben Copeland, LCS Interim Superintendent. “By reducing interruptions caused by personal devices, we can better support students’ academic and social development.”
