WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Wythe County Officials are advising residents and travelers to prepare for the increased traffic volume over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Wythe County serves the community as a regional and national travel hub, and after Hurricane Helene, Wythe County roads will serve as detours for drivers.
“Our county serves as a crossroads for thousands of holiday travelers. This is always one of our busiest weekends,” said Chuck Parnell, Director of Emergency Services for Wythe County. “With the additional detour traffic from North Carolina, we’re asking everyone to remain patient, drive cautiously, and plan ahead for longer travel times.”
Wythe County’s Department of Emergency Services will increase staffing due to the influx of traveling over the holiday. Residents should use separate roads such as Lee Highway and Chapman Road instead of major interstates.
“The safety of everyone traveling through Wythe County is our top priority this Thanksgiving,” Parnell added. “Whether you’re a local resident or just passing through, please take precautions, stay alert, and help ensure a safe and smooth holiday for everyone.”
Travelers are reminded to remember the following:
- Follow posted speed limits and stay alert.
- Fuel up your vehicle in advance.
- Perform routine maintenance checks, including windshield wipers, fluids, and lights.
- Avoid distracted driving, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Use alternate routes if delays become significant.
- Carry an emergency kit with blankets, water, jumper cables, and other essentials.
