VSP charged two for hit-and-run crash that killed a North Carolina woman



WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly multi-vehicle accident on I-81 in Wythe County that killed a North Carolina woman and seriously injured two others on November 30.

VSP said that around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer was driving on I-81N near mile marker 59 when it hit a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country van from behind while it was stopped in the right lane.

The tractor-trailer went off the left side of the road, hit a guardrail, overturned, and then caught on fire.

The collision from the tractor-trailer caused the Chrysler to first go off the right side of the road, before going back into traffic. It then went off the left side of the road and hit the guardrail.

A passenger in the Town and County, identified as 73-year-old Sarah Ann Williams of Kinston, NC, was taken to the hospital where she later passed away from her injuries.

Two other occupants in the van, 77-year-old Marquerite Clegg of Godwin, NC, and 78-year-old John Clegg suffered serious injuries. Police were unable to determine who was driving the vehicle.

According to VSP, the two occupants of the tractor-trailer, who were identified as Harpinger Singh and Kamaljeet Singh, both of Tracy, California, allegedly fled the scene after the crash.

Both individuals have been charged with felony hit and run.

The crash remains under investigation.
