FOREST, Va. (WFXR)– Several Bedford County Baptist churches worshipped together on Saturday in support of Forest Level Baptist Church, whose church building was severely damaged in a December explosion.
“Today is a day of support, a day of encouragement, a day of giving our financial resources to help and assist our sister church,” said Marshall Mays, moderator of the Peaks of Otter Baptist Association.
The Forest Level Baptist structure could be deemed a total loss, and pastor Marcin Wilson said the total cost of the damage could ultimately land in the range of seven figures, though it has been difficult to get official answers so far.
“It’s unstable,” said Wilson. “It’s been dangerous and uninhabitable even for the fire department and everyone who’s involved in investigating what went wrong to even complete their work.”
A gas explosion caused the destruction on December 9, 2024; a Monday night, when no one was inside.
“We’ve been able to step away and realize how fortunate we were, because we were not there,” said Wilson.
Fellow area churches have realized the same thing, and are now stepping up to help the Forest Level community.
“It could have been one of our churches,” said Mays, who said this is the second church that has been destroyed by fire or explosion during his time in the Bedford County area. “It could have been one of our homes and we would need someone to step up to the plate to help us.”
Since the explosion, Forest Level has been able to hold worship about a mile down the street at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.
They know a long road awaits them in regaining a permanent home, but they have already felt the love from those that have extended a helping hand.
“We’re thankful for all those that no matter how big or small, we just thank you that you thought of us enough to care and to sow into us at this time,” said Wilson. “It’s much appreciated.”
