ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Harrison Museum of African American Culture’s Board of Directors has announced a new executive director.
E.B. Smith, an accomplished arts administrator and cultural leader, has been named the new executive director. He brings more than two decades of theatre experience, education, and organizational development.
The museum’s goal for 2024 was to appoint this position as it prepares to celebrate 40 years. The museum recently announced its relocation to Melrose Plaza to expand community impact and engagement.
“It’s rare that a leader emerges whose storytelling ability is matched by the organizational leadership and development experience at the right time,” said Eric Beasley, board chair. “E.B.’s unique combination of education, experience, and talent make him an excellent choice to lead the museum through this transformative period in the Harrison Museum’s history.”
Smith also brings expertise in cultural programming and organizational development. He most recently served as partner and managing director at HC Smith Ltd. He also led strategic planning and diversity initiatives for many cultural institutions.
Smith has a background as chair of the Anti-Racism Committee at the Stratford Festival. He is also a member of the Black Pledge Collective, where he demonstrated his commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in cultural spaces.

A release from the museum says Smith’s vision plays a key role as a dynamic cultural anchor in the Blue Ridge Region to focus on innovative programming, exhibitions, and community engagement.
The museum says it plans to expand on educational initiatives and strengthen its position for exploring and celebrating Black history and culture under his leadership.
