HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Henry County Sheriff’s Office says an 18-year-old student has been charged after allegedly bringing a firearm onto school grounds on November 20.
Around 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office was alerted by Bassett High School officials of a handgun on school property. The sheriff said the threat was initially “self-reported” to the school by a student.
The firearm was then found outside of the building by the School Resource Officer.
After the incident, 18-year-old Charles Edward Mills was allegedly determined to be responsible for bringing the weapon to the school.
He was taken into custody by the SRO and has been charged with the following:
- Possession of a Firearm on School Property.
Mills has been released on a $3,000.00 un-secured bond.
School officials said that Bassett High School will continue its regular schedule, and no active threats were made toward the school or anyone at the school.
“We understand that incidents of this nature heighten concerns for student safety. Please be assured that the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Henry County Public Schools are committed to taking every safety concern seriously and responding swiftly to ensure the security of students and staff,” said the HCSO. “We encourage all students, parents, and community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or safety concerns immediately. Together, we can maintain a safe environment for all.”
