Snowshoe Mountain Resort seeing higher attendance numbers thanks to increased snowfall

POCAHONTAS COUNTY, WV. (WFXR) – While some people groan at the sight of more snow, staff and visitors at Pocahontas County, West Virginia’s Snowshoe Mountain Resort could not be happier.

The resort reports more than 40 inches of snowfall already this season, and people are taking advantage on the ski slopes.

“We haven’t got this much snow in forever, and it’s awesome,” Dyer Barger, a visitor to the resort from Elkins, West Virginia, said. “The tree runs are great, the groomers are great, the parks are great, it’s just a great day to be out here.”

A lot of people agreed with Barger.

The weather has helped bring in some unprecedented business numbers to the resort.

“No exaggeration, this is the best we’ve had it in a decade here at Snowshoe,” Shawn Cassel, the marketing director at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, said. “We’ve got folks coming up, taking work off, taking the paid time off (PTO) days they’ve been saving up and getting here, and it’s tremendous from a business standpoint for sure.”

All the natural snowfall benefits trail conditions at the resort.

Plus, some people can’t hold in their natural instinct to play in the snow when they see enough of it.

“Nothing helps us more from a marketing standpoint like snow,” Cassel said. “I think people see snow, even if it’s just a dusting in their yard, and they want to go see more of it, they want to go play in the snow, so that’s been huge for us, and conditions when we have natural snow like this is just the best.”

People like Barger agree.

“They’re the best (since) I’ve ever been up here to be honest,” he said. “They’re really fast, they’re really wide and they’ve got almost every trail open.”

Snowshoe recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in business in December, and all this January snow could be a late gift from Mother Nature herself.

The good news for everyone is it looks like even more snow is on the way.
