Sheriff arrests two wanted people after barricade situation near Martinsville



HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Henry County Sheriff reports two wanted people have been arrested after a barricade situation occurred near Martinsville on November 6.

The sheriff said on Wednesday, deputies attempted to arrest a wanted man, 37-year-old Samuel Dewey Franklin Jr. of Martinsville, at a home on Woodhaven Road. On the scene, Franklin allegedly barricaded himself inside and refused to exit.

Henry County SWAT Team and the Crisis Negations Team were then called to assist with the situation.

While negotiating, police learned that a second wanted person, 44-year-old April Michelle Cannoy of Bassett was also barricaded inside the residence. Negotiators were able to establish with Cannoy, resulting in her peaceful surrender to authorities.

Franklin however allegedly continued to refuse cooperating with negotiators and remained barricaded inside. After prolonged negotiations, authorities determined that Franklin would not surrender peacefully.

To avoid escalating the situation further, chemical munitions were deployed by the SWAT Team into the residence.

Franklin was then taken into custody without further incident.

37-year-old Samuel Dewey Franklin Jr. has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Two Misdemeanor counts of Failure to Appear
  • One felony Failure to Appear
  • Obstruction of Justice

44-year-old April Michelle Cannoy has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Probation Violation

Both suspects are being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
