ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents of a new scam making its way around the country.
People are reporting they have received gifts that appear to be from Amazon or other large companies they have not ordered from without a sender’s address on the package.
The sheriff said that gifts can range from jewelry to electronics and will have your address on the package. When the recipient opens the package, they will find a QR code to see who sent the gifts.
Residents are advised NOT to scan the code because once you do, the scammers will be able to see your personal information and your phone will be accessible to the scammers. This also includes your bank account.
Recipients can keep the gift or throw it away but are advised not the scan the QR code.
