ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke Fire & EMS will announce the winners of the 20th annual Fire Prevention Art Contest.
They will announce the winner on Thursday, November 21 at Station 5 while celebrating artists in the City of Roanoke and highlighting fire safety. The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week was “Smoke Alarms- Make Them Work For You.”
This annual event draws entries from students of all ages across Roanoke City Public Schools while inspiring them to draw on their creativity while also sharing fire safety messages in the community.
Roanoke Fire & EMS partnered with Roanoke City Public Schools, Rockingham Insurance, Mission BBQ, and Chick-fil-A for the art contest.
Hope Escobar, Community Risk Reduction Specialist with Roanoke Fire-EMS, praised the young participants for their passion and creativity. “It’s truly inspiring to see young artists making such an impact in our community with techniques they are learning in art class.”
Escobar said. “Their art reminds us of the importance of fire safety, especially when it comes to working smoke alarms. Through their eyes, we see that fire prevention starts with awareness – and these students are starting those conversations at home and in the classroom with their talents.”
The contest brings students together to support raising awareness within the city and the importance of smoke alarms in saving lives.
Art entries included information regarding monthly smoke alarm tests, replacing batteries, fire escape plans, and making sure alarms are placed in key areas in the home.
There will be a total of thirteen winners who will be honored at the Banquet alongside their families and art teachers.
Local partners of Rockingham Insurance, Mission BQQ, and Chick-fil-A will provide dinner and prizes to students while also receiving recognition for promoting fire safety.
