A Prince William County police officer was involved in a fatal shooting early Thursday after he discharged his firearm against a knife-wielding man in Woodbridge.
A Prince William County police officer was involved in a fatal shooting early Thursday after they discharged their firearm against a knife-wielding man in Woodbridge, Virginia.
A news release issued by the Prince William County Police Department detailed that the shooting took place at approximately 5:06 a.m. near the Department of Fire & Rescue Station 26 and the Central District Police Station on Davis Ford Road.
The shooting unfolded as the uniformed officer responded to reports of an adult man in the rear parking lot of the fire station. The man began to approach the officer while waving a knife.
According to the release, the officer fired their department-issued weapon after the individual repeatedly refused to comply with demands to drop the knife.
The man sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.
An investigation has been launched into the officer-involved shooting at the direction of the Prince William County Police Department, with the regional Critical Incident Response Team being selected to serve as an independent body.
Per protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Police did not identify the officer.
