Pinpoint Weather: Winter weather Tuesday and Wednesday

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A mostly dry Sunday is expected across Southwest and Central Virginia. However, a storm system will bring wintry precipitation to the region for the middle of the week.

A mix of sun and clouds will be overhead on Sunday. Afternoon temperatures will reach the 40s and 50s. A low-pressure system to the south may throw some rain and snow showers into areas along/south of US 460 overnight into early Monday morning. However, it doesn’t appear to be a washout.

Monday will start mostly cloudy with morning temperatures in the cold upper 20s and lower 30s. Decreasing cloudiness is slated for the afternoon with highs in the 40s.

Widespread mixed precipitation is anticipated on Tuesday and Wednesday. Snow and wintry mix is expected for Tuesday morning, but freezing rain/rain coverage will increase as the day continues. The wintry mix will remain in the forecast through Wednesday, although all rain is expected late in the day.

Overall, the highest snowfall totals are expected along/north of I-64. Areas south of US 460 could see some accumulating snowfall, but rain and freezing rain will be more of a concern.

Impacts are likely, so plan for delays and extra travel time. It will be wet and colder on Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures in the 30s. Due to the saturated ground, there is the risk of flooding, especially west of the Blue Ridge.
