ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Rain will move into the region Tuesday night and continue into the day on Wednesday. As cold air arrives, rain could briefly turn to snow before ending from west to east.
Snow accumulation will mainly occur on the western mountains, with a dusting eastward for some. A dusting is possible in some parts of the New River Valley. Some of the higher peaks along the Blue Ridge and the Mountain Empire could pick up an inch. One to four inches is expected for the mountains of Pocahontas and Highland Counties.
Before the snow, beneficial rainfall is expected, with one to two inches possible across the region. The highest totals will be along and east of the Blue Ridge.
Winds will increase as the cold front crosses the region. Wind gusts to 40 mph for the valleys, with gusts to 50 mph possible for the mountaintops.
The winds will push cold air into the region, with temperatures dropping through the day on Wednesday. In the morning, temperatures will be near 50, dropping into the 30s and 40s by late in the afternoon.
Temperatures will remain chilly through the weekend, with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s and 30s. Warmer air returns next week, with afternoon high temperatures returning to the 50s. Rain is possible on Sunday and again on Monday night.
