ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—Be prepared to bundle up! A cooling trend will occur across Southwest and Central Virginia through the end of the work week and into the weekend.
Weak high pressure will keep the region mostly dry on Thursday. A northwest breeze will bring in cooler air. Morning temperatures will start in the 30s and 40s while afternoon temperatures will rise into the near-average 40s and lower 50s. A mix of sun and clouds will be overhead.
An Alberta Clipper will move into Southwest and Central Virginia on Friday. Morning lows will be in the lower 30s. Rain and snow showers are anticipated west of the Blue Ridge during the afternoon and evening. Spotty rain showers may make their way east of the Blue Ridge. Winds will pick up. Expect high temperatures to top out in the 40s.
Little to no snow accumulation is expected along/west of the Blue Ridge. Up to an inch of snowfall may accumulate at higher elevations. Western Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties in West Virginia could receive three to five inches of snow.
Saturday will be cold and breezy—a fitting start to the winter season. Mountain snow showers may linger. Otherwise, increasing sunshine will be overhead. Afternoon temperatures will warm up into the cold 30s and lower 40s.
Cold and quiet weather is expected in Southwest and Central Virginia on Sunday and Monday. Morning lows will be in the teens and lower 20s, and afternoon temperatures will reach the 30s under mostly clear skies.
Near-average temperatures will return to the region on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Afternoon highs will be in the seasonably cool 40s and lower 50s. However, clouds will increase on Tuesday and rain showers are possible on Wednesday.
