ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for western portions of Greenbrier, Highland and Pocahontas Counties. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for east portions of Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties as well as Grayson County.
Snowfall of two to five inches is expected in the Mountain Empire and West Virginia mountains with five to 15 inches expected in the warning area. Some snow is possible eastward, but accumulations are largely not expected. If any occur, it will mainly be on the grass.
Wind conditions are expected overnight, especially along the Blue Ridge. A Wind Advisory is in effect for Carroll, Floyd, Grayson and Roanoke Counties until 7 a.m. Thursday.
Wind gusts at the higher elevations could approach 50 mph with 30 to 40 mph gusts possible in the valleys.
The wind will push cold air into the region with temperatures falling into the 30s overnight. Temperatures will only rise into the 30s and 40s on Thursday.
Snow showers are expected to begin in the west around midday on Thursday with a few flurries getting to the east.
Temperatures will be even colder on Friday, starting in the 20s and 30s and rising into the 40s. Warmer air returns for the weekend with highs in the 50s and 60s. Temperatures will rise into the 60s early next week with a few showers possible Monday and Tuesday.
