Pinpoint Weather: Showers return on New Year’s Eve


ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—Southwest and Central Virginia will start the week mild and breezy. However, chilly and blustery conditions will kick off the new year.

A few spotty rain showers may linger west of the Blue Ridge on Monday morning. Otherwise, skies will partially clear during the day with breezy winds blowing through. Gusts as high as 30 mph are possible. Afternoon temperatures will reach the mild 50s and lower 60s.

On New Year’s Eve, a storm system will approach Southwest and Central Virginia. Skies will become cloudier by Tuesday morning with patchy fog possible. Scattered rain showers will have the chance to move through during the day. Winds will turn gusty at times. Highs will be in the 50s to near 60 degrees.

Much of the shower activity will taper off Tuesday evening, before the start of 2025. If you’re celebrating outside, be aware that temperatures will be in the upper 30s and 40s around midnight with blustery winds blowing through. Some rain and snow showers will linger in areas west of the Blue Ridge Tuesday night through Wednesday.

One to three inches of snowfall may accumulate in western Greenbrier, northwestern Pocahontas, and western Highland counties by Wednesday night. Light snow accumulations are possible at higher elevations west of the Blue Ridge.

For the rest of Southwest and Central Virginia, it will be a cooler and windy start to 2025. Some sunshine may peek out on New Year’s Day. Wind gusts of 20 – 40 mph are possible. Morning temperatures will start in the 30s. Highs will range from the upper 30s into the lower 50s.

Mountain snow showers will taper off by Thursday with more sunshine on the way. Morning temperatures will start in the sub-freezing 20s and lower 30s before rising into the crisp 30s and 40s by the afternoon. It will still be breezy at times.

Another round of mountain snow showers is possible on Friday. Winds will become gusty with afternoon highs in the 30s and 40s.
