ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Dry and cooler conditions are expected across Southwest and Central Virginia on Friday. However, soggy weather is forecast for the weekend.
High pressure will build into the area on Friday, leading to quieter weather for Valentine’s Day. Morning lows will be in the frigid upper teens and 20s. Snow/ice melt may refreeze for the Friday morning commute. Afternoon temperatures will reach the upper 30s and 40s under mostly to partly sunny skies.
A storm system will impact Southwest and Central Virginia over the weekend. While freezing rain is possible on Saturday morning, much of the region should see mainly rain on Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s on Saturday. Sunday will be slightly warmer with afternoon temperatures in the 50s.
Periods of heavy rainfall could lead to flooding concerns, especially since the ground is saturated from recent rain and snow/ice melt. Gusty winds will develop on Sunday. Downed tree branches and power outages are possible.
Due to the rounds of rain ahead, a Flood Watch will go into effect for parts of the Alleghany Highlands. River Flood Warnings remain in effect for the Dan River near South Boston and the Roanoke River near Randolph as high water levels are expected over the next few days.
Snow showers may develop along our western slopes Sunday night, but most of the precipitation will wrap up by Monday. Decreasing cloudiness will be overhead. Overall, Monday will be colder and blustery with highs in the 30s and lower 40s.
While Tuesday will be mostly dry and a few degrees warmer, rain and snow showers will return to the region on Wednesday and Thursday.
