ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A winter storm will continue to bring freezing rain and rain to Southwest and Central Virginia on Wednesday.
Due to the threat of freezing rain, a Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect for Southwest and Central Virginia through Wednesday afternoon. Additional ice amounts of 0.10 – 0.20″ are possible.
An Ice Storm Warning will be in effect for Pocahontas and Highland counties on Wednesday; ice accumulations of two to four-tenths of an inch may occur.
If you have to head out on the roads, drive cautiously as roads may be slippery and slushy. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination safely. Significant icing may weigh down tree branches and power lines, resulting in tree damage and power outages.
Most of the off-and-on precipitation on Wednesday will be rain and freezing rain with some sleet mixing in. Temperatures will remain in the lower and middle 30s with cloudy skies overhead.
Cold rain showers will linger into Thursday, but a passing cold front will help to push the wet weather eastward during the morning. Most of the rain should clear out before noon. Increasing sunshine is slated for the afternoon with wind gusts of 20 – 30 mph possible. Highs will be in the 40s and lower 50s.
High pressure will build into the area on Friday, leading to quieter weather. Morning lows will be in the sub-freezing 20s. Afternoon temperatures will reach the upper 30s and 40s under mostly to partly sunny skies.
Rain will return to the area for the weekend. Periods of heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday could lead to flooding concerns. Highs will be in the 40s and 50s. Snow showers may develop along our western slopes Sunday morning into Monday.
