ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — For Southwest and Central Virginia, a dry and quiet Friday is forecast ahead of a weekend storm system.
Friday will start with morning temperatures in the 20s and lower 30s. Increasing sunshine and lighter winds are slated for the day. Afternoon temperatures will reach the near-average upper 30s and 40s. Clouds will increase Friday night with overnight temperatures falling into the upper 20s and lower 30s.
Scattered showers will have the chance to pass through the region on Saturday, starting during the morning. While much of the precipitation will fall as rain, pockets of freezing rain and snow/sleet are possible during the morning, especially in parts of the New River Valley. Any icing should be short-lived and light. Highs will be in the 40s under mostly cloudy skies.
A cold front will move through the region late Saturday into Sunday, allowing colder and drier air to filter into the area for the end of the weekend. Since there will be some moisture in the area, light snow and rain showers will have the chance to develop before switching to all snow.
Overall, light snow accumulations are possible in Southwest and Central Virginia; totals may range from a trace up to three inches in localized locations. Much of the snow will wrap up by Sunday night, but some upslope snow showers may linger into Monday morning.
Frigid arctic air will take over Southwest and Central Virginia for the week ahead. Starting Monday, highs will be in the lower 20s and teens while morning lows will range from the teens into the single digits. Blustery winds on Monday will make it feel extremely cold outside.
