ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—Prepare to bundle up! Noticeably colder temperatures and brisk winds are expected across Southwest and Central Virginia for the next few days. There is the potential for mountain snow showers.
Thursday will start with morning temperatures in the 30s and lower 40s. However, the brisk winds will make the region feel like it’s in the 20s and 30s. A mix of sun and clouds is slated for the day with highs ranging from the upper 30s to the lower 50s.
An upper-level low to the north will steer snow showers toward the Blue Ridge on Thursday and Friday. The Mountain Empire and West Virginia mountains can expect two to five inches of snowfall. However, portions of western Highland and northwestern Pocahontas counties could see five to 15 inches. While some snow is possible further eastward, little to no accumulation is anticipated.
Winter Storm Warnings have been implemented for parts of Pocahontas and Highland counties. Accumulating snowfall totals of 6 – 12 inches are possible. Locally higher amounts may occur along ridgetops. The snow and gusty winds may make travel difficult.
Colder conditions are slated for Friday. Morning temperatures will start in the 20s and 30s while highs will be in the upper 30s and 40s. Wind gusts of 20 – 40 mph are possible.
High temperatures will be in the 40s and lower 50s on Saturday, as the wintry mix wraps up along the western slopes. Winds will also lessen.
Quieter and milder conditions are expected for Sunday and Monday. While morning lows will be in the chilly 30s, afternoon temperatures will rise into the 50s and 60s. Showers may return to Southwest and Central Virginia late Monday.
