ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Bitterly cold conditions will continue through Thursday. A storm system will bring snow showers to Southwest and Central Virginia for the end of the week.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for northwestern Pocahontas County through noon on Thursday. Up to four inches of snow is possible. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for the portions of Greenbrier and Highland through Thursday morning. Occasional snow showers could bring one to three inches to the mountains.

Blustery winds and frigid temperatures are slated for Thursday. Morning temperatures will start in the single digits and teens with wind chills in the single digits and below zero. Despite the additional sunshine, highs will be in the 20s and lower 30s.

A low-pressure system tracking out of the Gulf of Mexico will bring moisture to Southwest and Central Virginia Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Plentiful cold air will allow dry snow to develop. Some sleet and freezing rain may come into the mix.
The timing/track of this system and the amount of dry air in place will impact snowfall amounts and precipitation types. Generally, one to four inches of snowfall is anticipated across the region.

Most of the snow will taper off before 9 a.m. on Saturday. Mountain snow showers will linger to the west, resulting in higher snowfall totals. Increasing sunshine is expected east of the Blue Ridge. Highs will be in the 30s.

There will be a brief warm-up on Sunday and Monday. Morning lows will be in the teens and lower 20s while afternoon highs will be in the 30s and lower 40s. However, another shot of arctic air is slated for the middle of next week.
