ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Here is a round-up of the latest outdoors news from across southwest and central Virginia.
Atlantic Striped Bass Future
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will discuss possible future Atlantic Striped Bass management options during a webinar at 6:00 p.m. Thursday December 5. It is open to the public. Recent surveys show juvenile striped bass numbers are low and that action needs to be taken to remedy the situation. Any new action will be on top of emergency regulations the ASMFC has already put into place. Atlantic Striped Bass are the state saltwater fish of Virginia. A vast majority — 70% to 90% — of all striped bass are spawned in the Virginia and Maryland portions of the Chesapeake Bay.
Bike & Camera Donation
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources Conservation Police got some big help from the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) in the form of e-bikes and flex cams. The bikes and cameras will help officers enforce regulations to protect turkeys and other game, and to assist in poaching prevention. The bikes and cameras were paid for by a 68-thousand dollar grant from the NWTF.

Multiple Hunting Options
You have multiple hunting options in the Roanoke region, right now. Deer, turkey, and bear are all in season, and so are small game like rabbit and squirrel.
Turkey behavior at this time of year is different than in the spring when many hunters in the Roanoke area target them. During the fall and winter season, the birds are bunched up more, and they gobble less. Look for food sources like acorns and signs of scratching. If you find those, turkeys are nearby.
