LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – The Lynchburg Police Department (LPD) has announced it will begin the encryption of its radio transmissions.
On November 14 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the LPD will conduct a one-day test to test the new encrypted radio system. The full usage of the system is expected to be used fully by early December.
The encryption of public safety radio communication ensures the privacy and security of the information that is shared through digital radio networks to make sure personnel within law enforcement are safe.
The Federal Communications Commission licenses the LPD radio system, and encryption is a feature that is allowed under the license.
The encryption of radio communications is done for the following reasons:
- Protection of sensitive information – this will protect information through radio communication such as personal information, details about suspects, victims or witnesses which can also include social security, driver’s license details, date of birth, and addresses.
- Preventing real-time monitoring by criminals – the current technology used by law enforcement makes it easy for criminals to intercept radio communications with low-cost scanners, software, or apps on cell phones. This will stop them from hindering response efforts by law enforcement as they have experienced this.
- Securing tactical operations and officer safety- Encryption will make sure that high-risk situations like tactical deployments, undercover investigations, or major crime responses. The encryption will ensure the safety of the information along with officer safety.
- Evolving with Technological Advancements – With the encryption technology evolving, it has made an easy and reliable communication source to allow police departments to communicate securely.
- Commitment to Public Transparency– The Lynchburg Police Department’s top priority is to commit to public transparency. The tool of computer-aided dispatch (CAD) can allow the public to view the list of calls on a map displaying their approximate locations. This tool is easy and quick for officers to use data.
