ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Well, the contest is over, the votes are in, and the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s new Opossum Ambassador officially has a name!
Meet Cosmos! After over 10,025 votes, the wildlife center said the response was “overwhelming.”
Cosmos is inspired by the vast, starry sky and the “perfect name for this nocturnal opossum who loves to roam his enclosure at night.”

It also represents the Cosmos flower, a cousin of the Marigold, and shares a special connection to the center’s prior ambassador, Marigold.
Along with choosing a name, the wildlife center said every vote raised $1.00, which means they raised over $10,000 that will benefit Cosmos and other opossums.
“Thanks to your support, we’ve raised a total of $10,025! Every dollar from your votes will directly benefit Cosmos and the many other opossums who come to us with life-threatening injuries. Your generosity ensures we can provide the best possible care for these amazing animals.”
Cosmos is now available to “adopt” through the Center’s Caring for Critters program.
“Thank you to everyone who participated. Please join us in welcoming Cosmos—the newest member of our ambassador team!”
