Man convicted in 2023 murder sentenced to 44 years in prison



WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – On Thursday, January 16, a man was sentenced to over 44 years in prison by the Wythe Circuit Court for the murder of 59-year-old Ronnie Lee Akers that occurred on January 13, 2023.

After pleading guilty, Calvin Duncan II was sentenced to 36 years and 11 months for First Degree Murder and eight years on weapons charges for a total of 44 years and 11 months to serve. Additionally, Duncan will also be on parole for 10 years upon his release.

On the morning of Friday, January 13, 2023, emergency personnel responded to a home on Saint Paul Church Road after reports of a fire. On the scene, crews found a vehicle on fire with the body of Ronnie Lee Akers inside.

Calvin Duncan was later arrested and charged during the investigation for first-degree murder, arson, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and disposing of a dead body on private property.
