Man accused of killing Soledad Najera awaits preliminary court hearing

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Investigators with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office believe they have the person who killed Soledad Najera, when they arrested 56-year-old Roberto Escalante, Najera’s husband, near his residence on Moorefield Bridge Road in Danville on Wednesday.

He attended his court arraignment early Thursday morning at the Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. He faces one count of premeditated murder in the death of his wife, and one count of willfully withholding or hiding her from authorities.

Escalante indicated he knew what he was being charged with and has since asked for a court-appointed attorney. However, the judge said that based on the value of his property, it’s unlikely he will receive one before his preliminary hearing.

Law enforcement remained on the scene of the house where Najera lived throughout the day continuing to investigate the property. She last disappeared in March of 2016.

This is still an ongoing investigation, and we will keep you updated when more details come in.
