Local insurance agency competes in Drumstick Dash to help give back to the community

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Drumstick Dash is a way for everyone, regardless of their athletic abilities, to move their feet so others can eat. Even local insurance agencies can get involved.

HAWK Advisers Incorporated is located in downtown Roanoke, not too far away from where the starting line is for the Drumstick Dash. Each year, the agency gets at least one of its employees to compete in the dash, as its way of helping to make a difference.

“One of our core values that we have as a company is to give back, and we look for opportunities to do that within the community,” Stephen Hamilton, the Executive Vice President of HAWK, said. “When there’s a race right outside your front door, it’s a great opportunity for us to talk to our team and see if families want to get involved.”

For Hamilton, this year’s dash will be the fourth one he plans to compete in. This one looks to be extra special for him because he’s racing alongside his two children for the first time.

He said he wouldn’t count either one of them out to win the race.

“I would say that if they were here, I know my eight-year-old would say, ‘Absolutely,’ because he’s in it to win it,” Hamilton said. “Our daughter, who is 12, she is also pretty competitive, but she is a little bit more modest.”

When asked about how HAWK employees usually prepare for the race, Hamilton said most of them usually just show up and compete in the race.

“I would say most of us are winging it, but I would think that there are some others who would probably beg to differ, that have been preparing, that are regular runners, and that look for opportunities around Roanoke to get involved with different races,” he said. “I have a feeling that there’s going to be a mix of both.”

There is still time for everyone to sign up for the Drumstick Dash. More information can be found on our website, wfxrtv.com.
