It was unclear how long the animal had been in the water when rescuers arrived at the scene.

Using Mustang Ice Rescue Suits, members of Forest FD Rescue 5 entered the water to ensure the horse’s head stayed above the water.

Rescuers were able to remove the horse from the water; however, due to injuries and hypothermia, it was euthanized, the Forest FD said.

Responding units included Forest Fire Department, Boonsboro Fire Department, Bedford County Fire Rescue, Bedford Fire Department, Special Operations Command, and Bedford Co. Fire Rescue.
