SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts have confirmed a case of rabies in a skunk in Salem.
The case of rabies was found in a skunk in the Kimball Avenue area of Salem on November 18.
According to the CDC:
- Rabies is a viral disease that is deadly in people if medical care is not received before symptoms start.
- Rabies is spread to humans and pets primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.
- Rabies control measures in the United States have significantly reduced rabies as a public health threat.
- Each year 60,000 Americans receive medical care following a potential rabies exposure.
To prevent the spread of rabies consider the following:
- Avoid all contact with wild and wild animals you don’t know
- Report injured or threatening animals
- Make sure your pets are vaccinated and are up to date on vaccinations
- Call your vet or local health department if you come into contact with a rabid animal
- Contact your vet or local animal control if your pet is exposed to an animal with rabies
