DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – On Wednesday, February 5, Goodyear in Danville announced the elimination of 850 employees.
A statement released by Goodyear said the reduction is part of an overall plan to “refocus” the Danville facility and on strengthening its competitiveness.
“Goodyear previously announced its plans to refocus its Danville facility on mixing and aviation, strengthening the plant’s competitiveness. This plan includes approximately 850 job reductions, including associates and contracted positions. Goodyear is committed to supporting those impacted associates through this transition.”
Danville City Manager, Ken Larking, released the following statement after the announcement,
“We are deeply concerned about Goodyear’s announcement that it will be eliminating 850 jobs at its local facility. Goodyear has been a significant employer in our community for decades, and we recognize the impact this decision will have on the affected employees, their families, and our local economy. We will work closely with state and regional partners to connect displaced employees with resources, including workforce training, job placement assistance, and support services. Danville has proven time and again that we are a resilient community. While this news is difficult, we remain committed to strengthening our local economy, attracting new investment, and creating opportunities for our workforce. We will continue working with Goodyear and our economic development partners to navigate this transition and support those impacted during this challenging time.”
Senators Kaine and Warner also weighed with a statement to WFXR and said,
“We’re extremely disappointed to hear that Goodyear is cutting 850 jobs to its manufacturing plant in Danville. As always, we’re committed to supporting economic development in the region, and ensuring federal funding comes to Southside.”
