Gas leak at Roanoke nursing home, residents evacuated


ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke Fire and EMS responded to a medical call at a nursing home which resulted in the discovery of a gas leak on December 5.

Fire officials said that Medic 8 B-Shift responded to the 1000 block of Mecca Street Northeast around 11:13 a.m. on Thursday.

After arriving on the scene, crews were alerted of a possible gas leak and requested more units for assistance. Engine 14 arrived on the scene and discovered gas readings originating from the basement.

Additional units were mobilized to evacuate residents as a safety measure.

The leak was contained to the basement and the utility company arrived to turn off the gas.

The building was then ventilated.
