Garage fire in Salem causes $30K in damage and kills 4 chickens

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – The Salem Fire & EMS Department says an accidental fire has resulted in $30,000 in damage and killed four chickens on February 6.

Salem fire officials said crews arrived at a home on Morwanda Street around 10:35 a.m. on Thursday to find heavy fire and smoke coming from a single-story detached garage.

Firefighters acted aggressively and attacked the blaze with handlines, limiting the danger to the exterior rear and part of the attic of the structure.

Around 26 personnel from Salem Fire & EMS and Roanoke City Fire-EMS Departments responded to the scene and took about 20 minutes to contain and extinguish the fire.

Four chickens in a pen near the garage were killed.

The Salem Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause of the fire to be an accident from a heating lamp too close to combustibles. The garage sustained about $30,000 in damage.
