FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Franklin County has just issued a local State of Emergency in response to the hazardous conditions and widespread ongoing power outages from the recent winter storm.
In a statement released online by Franklin County Fire & EMS, they have coordinated with the Emergency Operation Center and crews are working to restore power and clear road; however, residents and drivers are warned to use caution as many dangers remain in the area.
Warming Centers have been opened to the public affected by outages at the following locations:
- Cool Branch Fire Department – Open 24 hours as needed.
- Scruggs Fire Department – Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
County officials said any residents who need a place to warm up and charge devices can use these facilities and are encouraged to check on the safety of their neighbors, especially the elderly or those with medical needs. If you need to travel stay informed, have a plan, and be prepared before leaving your home.
“Residents are urged to limit travel to essential trips only. Road conditions remain hazardous due to downed trees. Emergency crews and utility workers are actively working in affected areas—please allow them space to operate safely.”
The local emergency declaration has activated additional response and recovery resources and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is fully staffed and working with AEP, VDOT, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and other agencies to restore essential services and address storm-related needs.
