FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – On Tuesday, November 26, the US District Court, Southern District Court of Florida denied a motion for a new trial for former Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Justin Sigmon.
According to court records, Sigmon’s Defense asked for a new trial because:
“A few days after discharging the jury, the Court was notified that the “Redacted Indictment” listed on the case docket at ECF No. 70 as the version submitted to the jury, included unredacted forfeiture allegations“
Court documents show that Jason Sigmon was convicted of sexual abuse of a minor on November 17, 2023. Sigmon was arrested and charged by the FBI in Miami in May of 2023 after allegations of an incident that occurred on a Carnival Cruise ship.
“Both Sigmon and the Amicus Brief argue that a new trial is warranted because of the jury’s exposure to the forfeiture allegations. In opposition, the government contends that if the jury was exposed to the forfeiture allegations, it was relatively inconsequential and ultimately does not indicate prejudice.”
