BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – The Blacksburg Police Department is sad to announce the passing of retired Chief of Police William “Bill” H. Brown.

Chief Bill served in Vietnam and became the first African American Police officer in the New River Valley in 1970.

After attending the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia, he rose through the departments ranks and was appointed Chief in 1994, becoming the first black police chief of Blacksburg.
He retired in 2006 after serving on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors from 2008 to 2015.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
