LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – The Lynchburg Museum is welcoming a new exhibit “Roaring Lynchburg: Social Life in 1925,” for visitors to experience.
The opening for First Fridays is on Friday, December 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 901 Court Street, and will be free and open to the public.
The goal of the exhibit is for visitors to experience life in Hill City 100 years ago as Lynchburg had a population of approximately 30,000 people.
The economy back then was built on tobacco, railroads, and manufacturing however, just like today, when residents finished work they socialized and unwinded from the day. However, once Prohibition hit, it led to people opening secret speakeasies.
The entertainment side of life was booming with local and international performers. The city was also filled with social clubs, dances, sports, and recreational activities within public and private spaces across the seven hills.
The exhibit will be guided by curator Crystal Diff along with guest curators Keith Harvey and Noelle Beverly at the opening reception. After the reception, attendees are encouraged to stay for 1920s holiday craft-making for all ages, as the decor will be placed on the 1920s-themed Christmas tree.

The Museum will be open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 3 for a program on Prohibition Era mocktails. The mocktails will be a tasting of Prohibition Era zero-proof cocktails and you can create your recipe card.
The 1925 exhibit will be on display at the museum through March 31, 2025, with free admission.
