ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – On Friday, February 14, Roanoke City Council members decided on Evelyn Powers to fill the vacant seat left by Joe Cobb.
In a 4-2 decision, Evelyn Powers (I) is now the seventh member of the Roanoke City Council.
Powers has been serving Star City as the City Treasurer and with the Roanoke City Government for more than 43 years and finished fourth in the most recent city council election.
The decision came down to two of three final candidates just days after sitting council members asked city attorney Tim Spencer to petition the circuit court to make the appointment.
The addition of Powers fills the last remaining seat and avoids the need for a special election.
In a statement given to WFXR in September 2024 regarding the future of Williamson Road, Evelyn said better transportation to and from Williamson is important and will help businesses.
“The majority of the businesses in the Williamson Road area are small business owners and they need to have good transportation so people who want to get to you can work for you,” she said, adding it will help deliver customers too.
