ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – On Thursday, November 14, the Director of Elections and General Registrar said the results for the Roanoke City Mayor race have been certified and released the following statement.
“The Roanoke City Electoral Board has completed its canvass of votes for the November 5, 2024, General and Special Elections. Every eligible and legal vote cast in the City of Roanoke during the absentee voting period and on Election Day has been counted and certified in accordance with the timelines set forth by the state.
The certified vote totals for the mayor’s race fall within the one-half of one percent margin permissible by Virginia Code for a locality-funded recount. Any candidate wishing to initiate a recount must file in the Roanoke City Circuit Court within 10 days. The Registrar’s Office is prepared to support this process if a recount is requested and granted.
90 days into this role, I have been inspired by our election officials’ dedication to administering an honest, fair, and secure election despite increased scrutiny and heightened pressure.
Next week, Roanoke City will join other localities across the Commonwealth in participating in the state-mandated United States Senate Risk-Limiting Audit on Wednesday, November 20.
Final preparations are being made today, November 14, to transmit Roanoke’s certified results to the Department of Elections in advance of tomorrow’s deadline. The State Board of Elections will further certify the results of the election on Monday, December 2.”
To request a recount, the margin must be within 1%. If the margin falls within 0.5%, then the recount is automatically triggered and paid for by the state.
Now that the results are certified, David Bowers has 10 days from November 15 to petition the local circuit court for a recount.
