DW Lawhorne announces expansion of the Bedford County Animal Shelter

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The first General Public meeting for the Community Pet Coalition (CPC) was held at the Bedford County Library to discuss a new expansion.

The meeting was held on Thursday, November 7 where the announcement for the expansion of the current Bedford County Animal Shelter to double in size was announced by DW Lawhorne the Assistant Bedford County Administrator.

New additions include the following:

  • There will be an additional 40 male and female dog kennels.
  • A dedicated animal wash station
  • A room where there will be a Spay and Neuter Clinic. This will be in the future as there aren’t enough funds to furnish the room or buy the required equipment. However, the nonprofit Community Pet Coalition will help raise money and develop a board of Directors for the clinic. The county and the DW will be helping as well.
  • The county is also hoping that in the future there will be a Veterinarian to work at the shelter.

Once the addition is built and finished, the animals in the shelter will be moved from the old facility as work will continue there as well.

The shelter will be out for bidding on the first of December 2024, with the county hoping to start construction on the first of 2025.
