DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – The Public Works Department will be treating major thoroughfares, bridges, and overpasses on Saturday, January 4.
With a storm forecast of a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain coming in later on Sunday, January 5, roadways need to be treated for those using roads.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg is advising residents that rain on Sunday may turn into a wintery mix when temperatures start to drop. The mix will continue overnight and will most likely turn into rain early Monday morning before sunrise.
“If the storm shifts farther south, then you could see more snow,” said meteorologist Amanda Sava. “If it goes farther north, then there will be less probability for snow.”
The storm can also bring a glaze of ice to untreated surfaces causing it to become slick. As a precaution, crews will treat the roads with salt treatments to keep the snow and sleet from bonding with the surface.
Residential streets will not be treated.
Public Works crews will be monitoring the street conditions on Sunday evening and overnight to spread salt to areas as needed.
